To be an outstanding teacher, one must take on many roles and possess a variety of skills and attributes. The most important piece to an exceptional teacher is their ability to create relationships with not only their students but their fellow colleagues. The teacher loses their opportunity to reach students and facilitate learning from the very start, if they lack the know how and desire to form healthy relationships with students of all backgrounds and abilities. The outstanding teacher must also be able to team with other colleagues and collaborate to discover the best ways to teach and create a learner friendly environment for everyone. The teacher must truly care about their students and let that shine through every single day no matter what obstacles are presented throughout the week. A teachers job is not concentrated solely in their subject matter but stretches cross curricular and combines the disciplines of every subject matter; to be a great social studies teacher is to be a great language arts and science teacher as well. It is vital to be versed in a variety of content literacy strategies and implement them into a classroom setting to the extent at which every child feels that their needs have been met. It is a requirement for the teacher to be patient and use the skill of reflection to not only understand what lessons went well, but to see which ones did not work and to adjust the methods used as needed. It is imperative that a teacher have communication skills to partner with parents and guardians to address problems in the classroom. It is important to strive to become not only a member of the district but to become a contributing member to the community through involvement in extracurriculars and lines of communication beyond the classroom walls. In my experience thus far I have been lucky to have the opportunity to work with 22 special needs kids throughout the academic day; ten of which were in my 2nd hour at Thornapple Kellogg.
