North to St. Augustine again
5/1 Fort Pierce Inlet, off unnamed island, 2014 hrs
Today was a long sail (50+ miles) from Lake Worth Inlet. I topped up on diesel and water, leaving the fuel dock by 0915. Half an hour later I was through the inlet opening and turning North. I was able to head pretty much on the rhumb line, end up only 4.5 m. to the east of it by the time I reached Fort Pierce. The wind built after noon from about 10-15in the morning to a steady 15-18, with a pretty lumpy sea still providing a following swell. Full sail and not very exciting, as the wind was coming from SSE, and I was on such a broad reach I had to head up a little to keep the jib full.. Too far from land to see anything, I passed the time reading the first 15 chapters of the Pelican Brief. I wish I had a setup to listen to audio books, as its is hard, in a following sea, to watch the course on the compass, the sails, the GPS, and read at the same time. I have to admit I have only so many lofty thoughts to keep my mind occupied as I sail. It would be so nice to have an auto pilot or, preferably, a wind vane. Then I could play more with the sail setting, the vang, the whisker pole and all that stuff to make the most of the wind- and I could relax and read, too. Of course, a friend along would accomplish the same thing, and some days I do long for someone to share this adventure with.
I do also want to spend sometime relaxing and enjoying the places I am visiting. In Lake Worth I was worried about the engine the whole time, and waiting for Karl, the mechanic, to come and do his thing. Plus, cash is very scarce, so I can’t just go to a bar and join the crowd. Of course, the crowd at these marinas seems to be men my age and older, most looking for women. It is astounding the number of men divorced or separated, living on boats. It seems to be a common dream that life will become meaningful after moving onboard. Of course, most of the guys I run into are, as one put it, “living at ‘Hotel California’ where you check in but you can never leave.” They hustle for cash jobs, have a part-time job at the marina, or try to create jobs around boat maintenance. It sounds nice, but never works out right. The couples usually seem to have it more together. They either have saved their cruising kitty, or they (or at least one) have jobs they can do on the internet.
