A host of products and services can help save money and the environment
Whether your home is 600 square feet or 12,000, today it’s not about whether to make green choices for improvements. You have to know which products and services will save you the most money and improve your quality of life while they help the environment.
Often the best place to start is by saving energy — electricity, oil or natural gas. You’ll also reduce your costs, improve your home’s comfort and air quality, and produce less air and water pollution.
Start small and get big results
In even the smallest home, you can reduce your power bill and improve air and water quality with a few easy choices like these:
n Replace the five regular light bulbs you use most with energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs. The U.S. Green Building Council says you can save $100 per year.
n Watch your thermostat . Up to 40 percent of your energy consumption comes from your HVAC (heating and cooling) system, says Scott Spivak, a building scientist and owner of the Green Collar Crew. Why heat or cool your house when you are at work or sleeping under the blankets? Using an automatic programmable thermostat and setting the temperature near 78 degrees in the summer and 62 degrees in the winter can save you a lot of money.
n Plant trees to shade the south and west side of your house for “natural” summer cooling. In winter when the trees lose their leaves, the sun will provide warmth.
n Set your water heater thermostat to deliver 120-degree water at the faucet. It’s easy to test the temperature; just put a thermometer in a glass while hot water is running.
n Recycle, sell or give away items you might throw away. You will save natural resources needed to make new ones while reducing the space needed for landfills.
