DSL users: 20 year clean-up today, How to prep

Back in 1990, when the Digital Subscriber Line system of internet connectivity was only 6 years old, the cleaning process was simpler. The number of DSL users nationwide was only in the thousands, so the coordination of the clean-up was not something that needed to be synchronized nationally.

Obviously, much has changed in the last 20 years. To minimize outages and downtimes on DSL systems, the cleaning of the lines are scheduled for 5:00 pm (1700) Eastern Daylight Time.

You will need to, as an end user of DSL service, is follow these simple instructions. First, locate the DSL filters that connect to your phone outlets. If you are able to unplug the DSL filter from the outlet, do so and place the DSL filters in a zipper style storage bag and place them in a refrigerator during the cleaning process.

If you are not able to disconnect the DSL filters, wrap the open ends of the filter tightly in black electrical tape. It must be black as color electrical tape could have chemical out gassing from the cleaning solvents used in the 20 year cleaning process.

Finally, the DSL filter at the site of your DSL modem must also be disconnected. However, this one should not be placed in a zipper style storage bag and refrigerated. These filters are temperature sensitive. These DSL filters and the DSL modem that it is used with must both be taken outdoors. If weather permits, exposure to fresh air will allow these devices to run their self-cleaning process in about 30 minutes time. In the case of rain, snow or other in clement weather, place the DSL modem and filter outdoors but under the cover of the wet weather, car ports, parking garages and even umbrellas are all acceptable means of protection.
