18 wheeler truck wrecks

The split second it takes in deciding whether or not to pull out in front of a large truck, commonly known as an 18-wheeler, could be the difference between life and death.  In 2008, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration , there were 4,229 fatalities in crashes involving large trucks in the United States.

There are many 18-wheeler wrecks that happen in Louisiana.  One such wreck occured in November 2009 and another in March 2010 .

George Donachricha, former owner and operator of a trucking business for 18 years, dealt with wrecks fairly often.  “It was pretty often; of course, when I was driving, traffic wasn’t as bad as it is today,” Donachricha said.  “Today the traffic is probably three times higher.”

Donachricha hears of these wrecks happening more frequently now. 

“Traffic is so heavy right now, and another bad thing is people don’t pay attention to driving,” Donachricha said.  “It seems like everybody is on a cell phone trying to drive.”

Irwin Guillot, a recently retired truck driver with 40 years experience, knows from personal involvement the dangers of a vehicle turning in front of an 18-wheeler.

“We were on a two-lane road, and traffic was bumper to bumper.  This lady was trying to make a left turn into a hamburger joint, and she turned right in front of my truck,” Guillot said.  “I hit her broadside; luckily it was the passenger side.  She went up under the truck, and when I hit the brakes she came out from under the truck and went down the side hitting the trailer all the way to the back.  I thought it killed her, but she lived to try to sue.”

Donachricha thinks some individuals purposely wreck into an 18-wheeler in hopes of a big payday.  “I do believe some people purposely cause a wreck because they know trucking companies have high liability insurance coverage,” Donachricha said.

Guillot believes some individuals notice a logo on the side of some 18-wheelers and will try to cause a collision to receive more bang for the buck.
