The 2nd Habit of Highly Effective College Instructors
In regard to the second habit of highly successful people, Steven Covey explains, âTo begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you are going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right directionâ (p. 98). He adds, ââBegin with the end in mindâ is based on the principle that all things are created twice .â For example, the construction of a house starts when the architect creates a set of plans, after which the carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and others build the house guided by those plans.
In some fashion we have all had experience applying the principle of two creations.  Parents plan how they will raise their children, beginning with a mental picture of the type of adults they want them to become. A restaurant owner begins with a business plan long before he serves his first customer. An artist has a mental image of his painting before brush touches canvas. Of course, not every artist follows this principle, which is why we have something called modern art . (Okay, I admit it. I made up that part.)
When people begin something without the end in mind, bad things can happen. Guys, did ever go on a picnic without considering that the attractive river bank where you were headed might attract mosquitoes too? As your wife [or girlfriend] unpacks the picnic basket she questions, âDidnât you pack the bug spray?â Ouch! Slap! Ouch! Hopefully those slaps were directed at the mosquitoes, not at you. From a more serious and relevant perspective, this is why some of your students fail. They donât plan enough time to complete their term paper, or they donât study the right material for the final exam. They don’t identify what it will take for them to succeed and plan their steps accordingly.
Covey also says, âWe may be very busy, we may be very efficient only when we begin with the end in mindâ (p. 98). This reminds me of occasions when students have complained to me that they studied many long hours and still failed the exam. âShe didnât teach us anything.â âThe problems were much harder than the homework.â âHe didnât cover the material in class.â The students may have been âvery busyâ preparing for that test, possibly also âvery efficient,â but their efforts werenât very effective. Sadly, however, in academic settings students arenât the only ones guilty of misguided efforts.
